One of the coolest techniques in the print industry is lenticular printing. Lenticular printing is a technique which uses the same lenses that are used in 3-D displays, which produces an image, creating the illusion of depth. These are the images that have the ability to change or move when viewed from various angles.

Created in the early 1940s, it was originally used for novelty products, but this technique has slowly evolved. With recent improvements to lenticular lenses, clarity and depth has greatly increased. A great example of this process is sports cards, such as baseball cards, which show the image of a baseball player and of the ball field behind him. Today, it is often used as a marketing tool in advertising, often changing the advertising message depending on the angle at which the image is viewed. This process consists of taking at least two lenticular images, and then combining them with a lenticular lens. With multiple lenticular images, you can create an animated effect. With approximately 30 images, you can create a 1 second video, showing full animation. This technique takes a lot of practice to perfect, but when done properly, it can create a lasting memory in a potential client’s mind.
